Cedars of Honor: Lebanon Remembers 10 Mountaineers Lost on Broad Peak

The Lebanese Federation of Climbing and Mountaineering, in cooperation with the Shouf biosphere Reserve, commemorated ten mountaineers who lost their lives in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on July 30.

Under the slogan “From the Cedars of Lebanon to the World’s Highest Peaks,” and in the presence of sports, diplomatic and military figures, as well as mountain-sports enthusiasts, a cedar tree was planted in the reserve to honor their lives and preserve their memory.

Following a minute of silence in tribute to the ten mountaineers, representatives of the Lebanese Federation of Climbing and Mountaineering Sports, the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, and the Honorary Consul of Nepal in Lebanon delivered speeches highlighting the importance of remembering the climbers and honoring their passion for the mountains and the spirit of adventure that united them.

Six of the mountaineers were from Nepal, including renowned climber Nims Purja, while the others were from Oman, Pakistan, the United States, and China. The tragedy is considered the deadliest mountaineering accident in more than thirty years.
